Session begins on stormy note
The Monsoon Session of the Delhi Assembly started on a stormy note on Monday and the House was adjourned for the day after a few hours. The Opposition BJP demanded a discussion on the CAG and Shunglu reports and the indictment of chief minister Sheila Dikshit.
The Speaker, however, refused the demand saying that the CAG and the Shunglu Committee reports were not a matter of the Delhi Assembly.
“The CAG report has been tabled in Parliament and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will take note of it. The GoM is already taking care of the Shunglu Committee report so there is no point to discuss the reports in this House,” said Speaker Dr Yoganand Shastri.
As the session started at 2 pm, the Leader of the Opposition Vijay Kumar Malhotra asked for discussion on the CAG report. The CM tried to defend but BJP MLAs shouted slogans and the House was adjourned till 2.30 pm.
Again at 2.30 pm, BJP MLAs shouted slogans and the House was adjourned. It was again convened at 3 pm but BJP MLAs stormed into the well to protest against the power tariff hike. The Speaker then adjourned the House for the day.
“The CAG report is not a report to discuss in this House and the Central government is looking into the Shunglu Committee report,” Ms Dikshit said. However, Prof. Malhotra said that the government is escaping the charges of corruption. “The government is drenched in corruption and the chief minister finds mention in CAG report more than 40 times,” he said.
The House started with Speaker’s proposal on Anna Hazare stating that “The House is happy on Anna Hazare breaking his fast and this House resolves to fight corruption. The House also respects the supremacy of the Constitution of India”.
