Sheila changes stand, says highrises ok
Two days after opposing the proposal of highrise buildings in the capital, chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday clarified that she is against highrises only in the centre of the city. Briefing the media after the NCRPB’s 33rd meeting, Ms Dikshit said, “I am not against highrises. I just wanted to say that highrises can not be built in the area on which we are standing.”
Urban development minister Kamal Nath also said that the city needs highrise buildings to decongest the city and curb the slums and unauthorised colonies.
“Delhi can not expand any more as it is surrounded by neighbouring states. So there is a problem of land. Highrise buildings are the only option for the city. I am not saying that we can build a highrise anywhere in the city but the outer areas which are still developing, are suitable for such buildings,” Mr Nath said.
Earlier on Friday, Ms Dikshit had said that she will not allow any high rise buildings till she is the chief minister. She claimed that the highrise buildings would put more burden on existing infrastructure of the city.
