Sheila gives 53 days to finish work

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit does not want the civic agencies to leave anything to be completed at the eleventh hour for the Commonwealth Games 2010 and has given them 53 days to make the city “absolutely ready” by August 31.

Ms Dikshit while chairing a high-level meeting to review the preparedness for the Games, has sent out clear directions that “any blame game and attitude of shifting responsibilities on other agencies will not be tolerated”. And, in case there are any coordination problems, the agencies should get in touch with chief secretary Rakesh Mehta, who has been made the nodal officer for the purpose. The agencies have been asked to contact him in the case they hit a roadblock and he would get in touch with the highest authorities to resolve the issue immediately.
Taking a serious view of frequent road-cutting by various agencies, Ms Dikshit has given them a deadline of July 31, after which no road cutting or digging would be allowed. During the meeting, the Delhi government officials told Ms Dikshit that the Games-related work was suffering on account of frequent road-cutting and digging by agencies such as ECIL, MTNL, BSES, NDPL, DIMTS, traffic police and the DTL even as the works were at the final stage of completion.
The CM also fixed August 10 as the deadline for removing all the construction debris by the civic agencies. They have been asked to coordinate among themselves and ensure that the city begins looking clean by the deadline. The MCD has also designated 168 locations in the city where it can be dumped.
“It was also decided that nothing should be left to be undertaken after end of August. Hence, Delhi will be absolutely ready to host the Commonwealth Games in all respect by 31st August,” said a senior Delhi government official.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
