Sheila raps agencies for rain chaos

A day after heavy rain blew away the claims of the civic agencies about preparing the city for the Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday asked the agencies to ensure that waterlogging did not recur. There were also reports that she pulled up the civic agency officials in the morning for the chaos

that reigned on the city’s roads on Monday evening. Delhi mayor P.R. Sawhney, meanwhile, apologised for the inconvenience caused to the Delhiites but maintained that the MCD was not found wanting in keeping the situation under control.
However, the citizens continued to face Monday’s “hang over” as water could not be completely cleared from some of the important intersections even by Tuesday morning. At Ashram flyover, a trailer truck broke down leading to massive traffic jam in the morning.
Talking to reporters, Ms Dikshit conceded that construction debris led to problem at many places. She, however, asked mediapersons to wait till August 10, which is the deadline for removing construction debris. During a meeting with the civic agencies — MCD, NDMC, PWD and DMRC — the chief minister asked the agencies to ensure that such things did not recur.
Municipal commissioner K.S. Mehra and later Delhi mayor P.R. Sawhney took a meeting of the deputy commissioners and other senior officials. The deputy commissioners were told that they would be held responsible for causing waterlogging. It was also emphasised that pumps should be kept in readiness for the points which are prone to waterlogging.
Talking to this newspaper, Mr Sawhney said that the MCD had informed the PWD about at least 21 points prone to waterlogging.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
