Delhi Metro service continued to stump passengers yet again even as they relied on it to reach their distant offices on Friday morning. The Dwarka-Anand Vihar/Noida line suffered the worst with Metro services remaining virtually stalled for more than 30 minutes during the rush hour.
Due to the problem, the train, which was proceeding towards Anand Vihar from Dwarka Sec-21, was asked to run at a slow speed due to which there was bunching of trains resulting in inordinate delays.
With the incident occurring during the morning rush hours, there were long queues on platforms in stations. People jostled with each other as they tried to enter the trains.
The technical problem in the train was spotted by the train operator at around 10.30 am when it reached the busy Rajiv Chowk station. Though the train was standing at the station for a few minutes, the train operator then began the journey and operated the train at a very slow speed.
“There was a technical fault in the train. The train operator ran the train slowly till its destination, Anand Vihar, after which it was taken off the track,” a DMRC spokesman said.
He said this led to bunching of trains and the trains were delayed for sometime.
“Normally, it takes just 30 minutes for me to reach CP from Rajouri Garden, but today it took double the time. The trains were crowded like anything,” a commuter said.
The delay in train services also led to over-crowding on platforms in key stations like Rajiv Chowk and Yamuna Bank.
Technical glitches on the Metro network have become common and this is the third such incident of delay in the past 13 days. On November 19, train services on the Gurgaon line were delayed for over four hours due to a problem on the Over-Head Electrification (OHE) system.
Again on last Sunday, the same line witnessed disruption of services for over an hour due to the same problem. DMRC chief E. Sreedharan has constituted a committee to look into the November 19 incident and suggest steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
