Steep hike in NDMC parking rates

Driving to areas under the jurisdiction of New Delhi Municipal Council would soon be dearer. The New Delhi Municipal Council has revised parking tariff in the entire NDMC area, which are significantly higher than those already existing.
According to the revised rates approved by the council chaired by chief minister Sheila Dikshit, a car owner visiting places such as Connaught Place, Sarojini Nagar and Khan Market would have to shell out `20 instead of `10 for the first hour, while the rates would go up as with increase in time for which the vehicles were parked at all surface parking lots under the NDMC jurisdiction.
The new rates will make the surface level parking rates for cars chargeable at the rate of `20 per hour, `40 for two hours, `60 for three hours, `80 up to four hours and `100 for five hours. The maximum charge has been fixed at `100.
Whereas, two-wheeler owners, would now have to shell out half the amount chargeable to four-wheelers. The NDMC officials said “The new rates shall be applicable for the new contract, after finalisation of tenders which will be awarded soon. Spokesperson for the council, A.K. Mishra, said, “The licence of the current contractors operating the parking lots was extended up to May. Now tenders for the parking lots will be renewed. The new rates will be implemented shortly,” he said.
NDMC officials said the parking charges have been revised following a study conducted to understand parking movement in their areas.
According to the study, most of the vehicles, around 67 per cent, were parked for less than two hours. For this group, the hike in parking charges is 300 per cent.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
