Student thrashed by seniors succumbs
A 19-year-old dalit student of Satyawati College died on Wednesday morning, a week after he was allegedly thrashed by his seniors in northwest Delhi.
The police identified the deceased as Akshay Prakash, a first year student of B.Com. (Hons.) at Satyawati (Evening) College. “Prakash, a resident of Ashok Vihar’s S
angam Park, and his friend Lalit Kumar had been thrashed by a senior Prashant Tyagi, a leader of BJP’s youth wing ABVP and his associates on September 27 outside the college,” said a senior police officer.
Both were rushed to Sundar Lal Jain Hospital with head injuries. “Lalit was discharged on Monday, Akshay was put on ventilator. His condition turned critical on Wednesday morning and he died,” the officer said.
Though the reason for Tyagi’s action is still being investigated, sources said that the murder took place as a result of an alleged infighting in the college. Sources said all accused are allegedly members of BJP’s youth wing ABVP.
Satyawati College students demonstrated at the Nanak Piau Gurdwara, blocking traffic and damaging buses on Wednesday evening.
“We had arrested Tyagi on the same day and a case of murder has been registered against him. We are looking for other accused,” the officer said.
