Tension after man assaulted
In a suspected robbery attempt by criminals on a prowl in the national capital, a businessman was assaulted by four unidentified youths in Nihal Vihar area of west Delhi on Monday morning, sparking communal tension in the area.
The police had to press in extra forces to maintain law and order in the area on Monday afternoon following the assault on the victim, identified as Manjeet Singh, a resident of Nihal Vihar. The police said the incident took place at around 8 am when four unidentified assailants entered into his mobile shop. “Singh had an argument with them following which he refused to recharge their mobiles. One of the youth hit him with a blunt object and he fell unconscious. When he regained senses, he found his turban ripped apart and a part of his beard and hair was trimmed,” a senior police official said.
Singh was spotted unconscious by a customer who alerted other shopkeepers after which police control room was alerted. Later in the day, the incident triggered massive protests by the Sikh community.
