Thieves dig tunnel to steal jewellery

Thieves struck at a jewellery shop in south Delhi on Tuesday night by digging a four-foot-long tunnel to execute one of the rarest thefts reported from the capital.
The police said the thieves walked inside the drain for about seventy metres and dug a tunnel which led them to the shop in Khanpur. Jewellery worth `10 lakhs is reported missing. Siddharth Prakash, the owner of Rastogi Jewellers On Devli main road said he opened his shop on Wednesday morning and found the tiles on the floor broken.

“The jewellery in the cabinet was missing. My son, who opened the shop, was shocked and could not understand how the theft took place. He called me and then we informed the police. The locker was left untouched but the thieves fled with around `5,000 kept in the drawer,” he said.
The police said the theft might have taken place post midnight as there were people in the shop till 11.30 pm on Tuesday.
Mr Prakash said the a group of people working for a tent house had come to decorate the main gate of his shop with flowers and tents on Tuesday. “They were working till late night. My son was overseeing the work and there was no noise from the shop till midnight when they left. It looks like the work of local criminals. I have given the names of a few suspects to the police. I can’t believe how they managed to drill the floor of my shop without any mistake,” he added.
The CCTV footage has recorded two persons inside the shop but their faces could not be recognised as the lights inside the shop were not switched on at the time.
“We are probing the involvement of some kids in the act. The hole drilled is not big enough for a hefty person to get in. The height of the drain is around four feet and one would have to stoop really low to walk the entire 70 metres to reach the shop. Also the jewellery, kept in the wall cabinet was left untouched which is surprising. We have registered a case and investigations are on,” said a police official.
