Tihar to shortlist inmates for ‘semi-open jail’
With a Facebook page, dozens of production units and campus placement of inmates in top companies, Tihar jail has set up a landmark. The DG prisons, Mr Niraj Kumar, on Tuesday said that the Delhi government has approved the proposal of semi-open jail facility and Tihar will soon become country’s first semi-open jail. Talking to the media persons on the achievements of Tihar Prisons for the year 2011, Mr Kumar said that the inmates having a good record during their time in jail would be shortlisted for the semi-open jail facility. The jail authorities presented their annual survey in which the women inmates topped the list. According to the survey report, of the 3,207 convicts lodged inside the Tihar jail last year for various crimes, 46.15 per cent of female inmates have been convicted for murder charges as against 33.47 per cent of male counterparts.
They also top the chart in kidnapping and abduction as 10.58 per cent female inmates have been convicted for the same as against 3.66 per cent male prisoners. Mr Kumar said that the women’s jail of Tihar prisons will be the first in the country to install a full body scanner.
The jail authorities said that the total population of the jail till December last year was 12,124. However, the capacity of the jail is 6,250 only. “Construction of Mandoli jail complex for lodging around 3,776 prisoners began in May 2008 and the stipulated date of completion is June 2012,” Mr Kumar added.
