Traffic cops to audit roads to enhance safety
In a first of its kind, the Delhi Traffic police is going to conduct an audit of the roads to enhance safety measures for commuters in the city. The findings of this audit will be submitted to the concerned agencies responsible for their maintenance and they will be asked to take corrective action.
The Delhi traffic police has undertaken this mammoth task to get an audit of roads done in the national capital, primarily to ensure that the risk of driving on the city roads is reduced and that there is a minimal chance of accidents. This will also reduce the danger posed by rash drivers to unwary pedestrians and also help in reducing petty criminal incidents.
A number of agencies in Delhi like Municipal Corporation of Delhi, NDMC, National Highway Authority of India, etc are responsible for the maintenance of roads. Sources said the road safety audit cells of these agencies are lying defunct which prompted the decision, “Once we get the findings of our survey, the concerned agency will be asked the take corrective action. This will reduce the chance of accidents and will also help reduce crime in the city,” a senior Delhi traffic police official said.
The Delhi traffic police mans the city roads through a number of traffic circles which are headed by senior police officials of the level of deputy commissioner. Sources revealed that the DCP will be in-charge of the survey in a particular circle and he/she will file the report with cell officials.
Lately, the city has seen a number of accidents which were blamed on faulty design of the roads.
