TV crew makes a mockery of the mishap
“Yehi hai woh darwaza jo is imarat ka kabi hissa hua karta tha,” roared a TV reporter, settled between a mountain of debris deposited by a MCD dumper and a shy man donning a half torn dhoti. The camera tilted up and the shy man, Sushant Haldar, prepared to speak.
“This gate was meant to be sold,” someone shouted, before Haldar could start. People burst into uproarious laughter. A young man from the crowd spoke out, “The gate was not part of the building,” he said, “It was lying there before the building collapsed.” It was Raja Saxena, a resident of a building adjacent to the collapsed structure.
The reporter, unmoved by Raja’s correction, began by asking Haldar, “What did you saw at the site?” Haldar, who was not allowed to go near the site by the police, began, “There are people trapped inside the debris. We can hear their shouts. But the police has cordoned the entire area. They won’t allow us in.”
The reporter took the microphone away from Haldar and began a commentary on “negligence” of the police and government in not allowing the victims to go near the site. This was the story of most of the 25 TV crews, which were grounded at a park situated close to the building that collapsed.
