Two brothers drown in Burari stream
Two teenage brothers in north Delhi’s Burari area met their watery grave after they drowned in a stream, the police said on Tuesday.
The police said the incident took place on Monday evening when the deceased, identified as Bhairav, 15, and his brother Monu, 9, went to bathe in a stream in the Burari area. The victims were accompanied by their younger brother Gaurav, 6, and some friends.
“As they were preparing to get into waters, Monu slipped and fell into the stream. He was trapped in the swamp and cried for help,” a senior police official said. Seeing his brother in danger, Bhairav plunged into the water and tried to save Monu.
“In the effort to save one another, both brothers were trapped in the swamp and didn’t surface for a long time. Their brother and friends became fearful and rushed to their locality where neighbours and the victims’ family was informed about the incident. A call was also made to the police control room around 5.30 pm,” the official said.
However, by the time the police and neighbours arrived at the spot, the two had drowned, “We had to hire professional divers to salvage bodies from the stream. The bodies were handed over to their family after post-mortem examination,” the official said.
The deceased were residents of Kaushik Enclave in Burari. Sources said Monu was trapped in a ditch allegedly dug by people involved in illegal sand mining. The father of the deceased, Chandragat, who was a government employee, had died two years ago, while their mother, Hema, works in a private company.
