VC: After probe, we will approach police
The vice-chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Prof. S.K. Sopory, has said that the university will approach the police after the internal enquiry is over. He also met Union human resources minister Kapil Sibal over the matter.
Talking to reporters after meeting Mr Kapil Sibal, Prof. Sopory said, “After the full inquiry report comes up, we may have to hand this to the police.”
The JNU set up a one-man committee under chief proctor H.B. Bohidar to inquire into the incident revolving around a video clip circulating around the campus. The video clip shows a male student and a former female student in an alleged compromising position. Another student allegedly helped them shoot the video that was intentionally shot for the market for monetary gains.
“We have also issued a notice that anybody found circulating this kind of stuff will be counted as an offender. JNU stands for many other things, not for these kind of activities,” he said.
Expressing his concern over non-students coming from outside and putting up in hostels, he said security in the varsity would be upgraded and a committee would be set up to relook into the hostel manual as it needs some change.
Prof. Sopory said the incident came up during his meeting with the HRD minister, who expressed “satisfaction with the immediate action taken by the inquiry committee”. He said he has held meetings with the hostel wardens and with the students also, who have expressed support to any action taken by the varsity to prevent this type of incidents from taking place again.
