Violence at rail station, dozens hurt
Asking passengers to dismount from atop the railway bogies of a train took a violent turn at a railway station in Ghaziabad on Thursday with more than a dozen policemen and nearly the same number of passengers getting injured in the clash.
According to the Ghaziabad police, the incident occurred at Loni railway station early in the day. Over a thousand passengers were travelling on the rooftops of the train — SD-6 running between Saharanpur and Delhi when it stopped at Loni railway station. Initially, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) asked the passengers to come down and not travel on the rooftops as it could be dangerous to their lives. However, the passengers refused to come down and a heated argument ensued between them. The RPF personnel then resorted to use of force, following which the situation turned ugly. Angry passengers retaliated by attacking the policemen with whatever they could lay their hands on. They further barged into the police post of the railway station and vandalised the furniture, besides damaging other items.
The RPF then had to call in the local police for re-inforcement.
The local police, along with the RPF, then brought the situation under control.
