Volunteers train at unfinished venues
Even as most of the Commonwealth Games venues are yet to be declared ready and handed over to the Organising Committee, the rehearsals for the volunteers have begun in order to give them some time for acquainting themselves with the area and also identify their specific roles on the ground for the D-day, which is now just 30 days away.
OC sources said that though work is going on most of the venues, the volunteers are being given a feel of the place to the extent possible.
Several venues, like the Yamuna Sports Complex (YSC) and even the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium complex, are yet to be completed and formally handed over to the OC.
Although the work related to the main structures has been finished, cable-laying work for telecommunication and security is still going on. In fact, the Yamuna Sports Complex is likely to get completed only around September 15.
The rehearsals of the volunteers began at YSC a couple of days ago in which more than 150-odd volunteers participated. They dealt with issues related to protocol, catering and security, besides other aspects.
“The volunteer training programme has been going on and with the Games so near, we had to ensure that these young men and women got an idea of what lies where and what were they all supposed to do. Hence, we have started their rehearsals as and where possible,” said an official.
On the other hand, the rehearsal for setting up the aerostat at the JLN stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held, is also likely to begin in a couple of days.
A team of the OC had already gone to the United Kingdom to see the demonstration of the aerostat.
