Walia inspects ghats, checks preparations
The city government on Monday reviewed arrangements for the two-day Chhat Puja celebrations beginning Tuesday.
Delhi revenue minister A.K. Walia visited several important ghats along Yamuna to personally monitor the preparations. Mr Walia said that the Delhi police has been requested to install CCTV cameras at the ghats in order to provide fool-proof security. He said the revenue department will bear the cost of installation of CCTVs.
In view of last year’s rush, six new ghats for Chhat Puja are being set up taking the total number of ghats to 47.
Devotees flock to various ghats along the Yamuna to offer prayers to the Sun god on Chhat, which is celebrated in the city by an estimated 40-lakh-strong Poorvanchali population.
Mr Walia said the Delhi Jal Board will be releasing 150 cusec of water into the Yamuna to provide fresh water to devotees. He said the revenue department has deployed boats and divers at ghats as a precautionary measure. Display boards have been installed indicating the water level at ghats.
Earlier, chief minister Sheila Dikshit slammed the BJP for trying to draw political mileage by demanding public holiday on Chhat Puja day.
