Woman, 28, kills self over dowry
A 28-year-old woman, who was forced by her in-laws to quit her job after she refused to fulfil their demands for dowry, committed suicide at her residence in Bindapur area of southwest Delhi on Wednesday night.
The police said the incident was reported by the in-laws of the deceased, Chitra Sharma. “She was rushed to a city hospital by her in-laws after she was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room on Wednesday night. The family lives in the Om Vihar area in Bindapur,” a police official said. The official said Chitra was declared brought dead at the hospital. An SDM inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
The family members of Chitra, who got married to Vishal, a resident of Om Vihar in Bindapur and an MNC employee in November last year, have alleged that she was harassed by her husband and in-laws over dowry. No suicide note has been recovered from the deceased.
“She was allegedly facing mental and physical harassment over dowry. Her mother has alleged that they had fulfilled all the dowry demands made by her in-laws at the time of marriage. They had gifted an Hyundai i10 car to Vishal. However, the family was allegedly demanding Rs 4 lakhs from her family which was turned down by Chitra’s parents. She was even forced by Vishal to quit her job three months ago for not arranging money,” a source said.
“We are verifying the allegations made by victim’s family. No arrests have been made so far,” a senior police official said.
