Woman, 32, dies, dowry probe starts
A 32-year-old pregnant woman died under highly mysterious circumstances in Bindapur area on Tuesday with her relatives alleging that she was poisoned by her husband for dowry.
Police officials said the deceased, Sangeeta, was married to Rajiv Sharma, a trader in Uttam Nagar area of west Delhi two years ago. Rajiv told the police that he had gone to his sister’s place on Tuesday afternoon to celebrate Raksha Bandhan.
“Rajiv received a phone call from Sangeeta, who said that her health had deteriorated and asked him to come back soon. Rajiv reached home and rushed Sangeeta to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead,” a police official said, quoting Rajiv. The police was informed by hospital authorities about the death.
The deceased’s brother, Vinod, has alleged that Rajiv used to harass Sangeeta for dowry. “Rajiv used to beat her up when his growing demands for dowry were not met,” Vinod said.
The police has sent the body for a post-mortem examination. An SDM inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
