Woman asks for `7 lakhs, 18% interest
Justice S. Muralidhar of the Delhi high court on Tuesday sought a response from the Union government as well as the Delhi government on a petition filed by a woman, Ratan Kaur, who lost her son in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, seeking compensation for the loss suffered by her.
The court issued notice to the NCT government and the deputy commissioner, northwest Kanjhawala and sought their replies by October 20 on the petition of Ms Kaur, who claimed a compensation of `7 lakhs with 18 per cent rate of interest .
Filing the petition through her counsel Manohar Singh Bakshi, Ms Kaur said that so far she has got only `10,000 as compensation.

PCR van catches fire, cops safe

In a second incident of its kind, an assistant sub-inspector and a head constable of Delhi police had a narrow escape when a PCR van caught fire in central Delhi’s Paharganj area on Tuesday morning.
According to the police, the incident occurred at around 8.30 am on Paharganj flyover when a PCR van heading towards Paharganj went up in flames.
Police officials said the driver of the vehicle, a head constable, spotted smoke billowing out from the engine. “The driver immediately stopped the vehicle and asked the ASI to come out. As soon as the two came out, the vehicle was engulfed in flames,” said a senior official.
