Woman slain, 6 of family arrested
The Noida police on Monday arrested six members of a family in connection with a honour killing case. The police said that the six people, including parents of girl, have been arrested for killing her as they could not “bear to see her live” with a lower caste man she had married.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) A.K. Singh on Monday said, Sanjeeta, 23, who worked at an IT firm, had married her colleague Ravinder, who was from the SC community. She had gone missing July 11 and Ravinder lodged a complaint with the police, suspecting she had been killed by her family members.
On investigations, the police found that Sanjeeta’s father Bir Singh took her to their native village Barmadpur in Bulandshahr, where he killed her and burnt her body.
After his confession, the police arrested five others, including her mother and other relatives. Sanjeeta’s father said it was not bearable for them to see the couple continuing their relation as husband and wife since the boy was from a lower caste. There was no way left for them except to kill one of them and to eliminate the girl was the easiest way, the SSP cited from their confession.
Ravinder said he had married Sanjeeta February 15 at an Arya Samaj temple in Delhi but she only revealed it to her parents in April when they started searching for a match for her.
“On July 11, I went to her house and revealed the facts to her parents and requested them to send Sanjeeta with me but they asked me to come on July 18,” he said, adding it was the same day, they took her to their native village and killed her.
