The Yamuna’s water level began receding on Sunday, giving a ray of hope for the residents of the villages inundated in the low-lying areas of the city. However, traffic was thrown out of gear at several places following heavy rains through the day.
According to the Central Water Commission report, the level of Yamuna had begun receding late Saturday night and, after having reached a maximum of 206.78 metres had come down to 206.02 metres by 6 pm on Sunday. The trend was likely to continue and the water level was likely to reach 205.20 m on Monday around 4 pm.
Residents of areas like Garhi Mandu, Usmanpur Pushta, Jagatpur village and Shastri Nagar have already been evacuated. Areas near the Kashmere Gate ISBT also saw heavy flooding. The crematorium at Nigambodh Ghat stopped functioning due to flooding and the managers there had to return at least five corpses during the early part of the day.
The other areas where water has entered include Yamuna Vihar, Madanpur Khadar, Sonia Vihar, Jaitpur, Tibet Market and Yamuna Bazar. The Old Yamuna bridge remained shut for road and rail traffic.
Meanwhile, the capital received an overall rain of 45.1 mm since Saturday morning. In the last nine hours ending 5.30 pm on Sunday, the capital received 26.8 mm of rain. Two incidents of house collapse were reported from Motia Khan and Badarpur Khadar. However, nobody was seriously injured.
Heavy rains led to waterlogging in various parts of the city including Kashmere Gate, several localities in old Delhi, Bhajanpura, Najafgarh, Bhogal and Karol Bagh.
Traffic movement was affected due to heavy waterlogging on Rama Road in Najafgarh, Moti Nagar, Jakhira, New Rohtak Road, Kamal T-point to Karol Bagh, Model Town- I and II to Azadpur and near Kashmere Gate Metro station. The weatherman has forecast one or two strong spells of thundershowers on Monday.
