Yamuna recedes, flood fear eases
The flood threat in the city subsided after Yamuna water level started going down on Saturday. “The water level is expected to recede further during the day,” said an official of the Delhi government’s flood department. This has come as a respite for the residents of low-lying areas and Yamuna bank, who have been living under the flood threat. The reversal of drainage water and overflowing Yamuna had caused severe waterlogging in these areas.
The Yamuna’s water level started receding but the river is still well above the danger mark of 204.83 metres. The water level, which crossed the 207-metre mark, reached 206.10 metres on Saturday morning. The level rose alarmingly after Haryana released over 7.44 lakh cusecs water from the Hathinikund Barrage in Yamunanagar district, breaking a 32-years-old record.
