Yamuna rising, govt issues alert
With the arrival of monsoon in the city and neighbouring states, the Delhi government has on Wednesday asked residents of low-lying areas along the Yamuna river bank to remain alert and if possible shift to safe places.
The statement has come in the wake of Haryana releasing 50, 000 cusecs of water in the river which is likely to reach the city by Wednesday night. Haryana has been witnessing incessant rains for the past two days.
Delhi revenue minister Raj Kumar Chauhan on Wednesday said, “Flood control department as well as disaster management authority have been told to remain alert and take necessary steps to meet with any eventualities.”
Mr Chauhan added that all the departments concerned have been instructed to coordinate among themselves and deal with the situation effectively.”
Several villages of Kurukshetra district have been marooned in deep waters due to a 100-feet breach in Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal at Gulabgarh village.
