Yamuna touches 207m after 32 yrs
The flood threat in the city turned grim as the Yamuna, flowing above the danger mark since long, further swelled on Wednesday and its water level crossed the 207 metre-mark for the first time in 32 years.
The Yamuna was flowing at 207.05 metres, well 2.22 m over the danger mark, on Wednesday evening after more water released from the Hathinikund barrage in Haryana reached the capital. The flood and irrigation department officials of the Delhi government said that the Yamuna would rise to 207.30 metres by Thursday. It is to be noted that the city witnessed massive floods in the year 1978 when Yamuna water level had touched 207.49 metres.
Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed the capital on Wednesday leaving several low-lying areas flooded. Various city areas witnessed traffic snarls due to waterlogging.
