Big toad comes to the capital
Hard-to-find and accessible through alleyways, the ‘speakeasy bar’ is back and this time in the city. Born out of necessity, the original legion of speakeasies sprang up in 1920s America during the modernist movement.
To recreate the era, the bar at Olive reinvents itself as one of India’s first speakeasy bars, The Dirty Martini.
“The tradition of speakeasies is rooted in the time of prohibition. They were illegal bars to which access was screened. At Olive, the new bar space combines the lower level and the terrace together to form The Dirty Martini,” says AD Singh, managing director, Olive bar and kitchen.
The refurbished bar will incorporate art décor style and has been conceptualised by set designer, Sumant Jaikishen. Talking about it, he says, “The 1920s saw the the emergence of flappers, geometric motifs, pastel shades of pink and blue and Jazz in USA. I have tried to keep all this in mind while designing it. It will not be just another cocktail bar, for sure.”
The Dirty Martini will be open from November 16
