A classic pick-me-up drink
Cocktail lore puts the origins of Bloody Mary in 1921 Paris. Fernand Petiot is usually credited with creating the first Bloody Mary at the New York Bar which later became Harry’s New York Bar. The place was frequented by American expatriates like Ernest Hemingway.
Interestingly the drink was first concocted as a “pick-me-up” (a hangover cure) and to this day this delicious classic vodka cocktail continues to be a favourite remedy for alcohol
poisoning.
Classic Bloody Mary (6 helpings)
180 ml vodka
3 cups tomato juice
6 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
¼ tsp Tabasco
1 stalk celery
Method
Add all ingredients (except celery) in a
pitcher, stir and refrigerate. Serve chilled in tall glasses with lemon wedges for garnishing with the celery stalk.
In many regions of the world, a chilled pint of beer is often ordered as a chaser to a Bloody Mary, especially when it is being drunk in the morning as a pick-me-up.
