Sinful Scoops

There’s nothing quite like the traditional kulfi which gives respite from the blazing summer sun. The Indian foodie is spoilt for choices when it comes to desserts, thanks to the wide range of sweet delicacies available in many avatars today.

However, kulfi from some of the oldest joints in the city still remains a “hot” favourite!
Anuradha Vohra, a housewife recalls, “I remember as kids, we would especially go to Roshan Di Kulfi to grab a bite of the kulfi faluda. The place is still the same. Nothing has changed and I can assure you that their flavours are the best.”
Nikhil, an IAS aspirant feels, Pandara Road remains an ideal place for kulfis as from brands as old as 30 years, to the new ones; one gets all varieties there. “One of the shops there is over 20 years old, and is open till the wee hours and serves amazing matka kulfi. Some of these kulfis can cost around `40 per kulfi, but it’s totally worth it. And when they say they use malai in the kulfis, they mean it. It’s quite filling and definitely worth a try,” he says.
Walking through the alleys of Sita Ram Bazar you’ll find Kure Mal Mohan Lal Kulfi Wale. Their mango stuffed, paan kulfi are very popular. Though a piece costs around `200, officials from the shop tell us, that high amount has never affected the clientele stepping in. And the variety on display often makes it hard for one to decide which one to try. “One of my favourites from this place is the mango stuffed kulfi which is not available anywhere in Delhi. The way they make it is even more exciting. A mango is hollowed out and filled with creamy, plain kulfi and left to freeze,” says Meru, a content writer.
Even though the modern day versions of ice cream with a slew of brands have case a shadow on kulfi, as a result, kulfiwallas are rarely seen on the streets, but in small markets in the city, they enjoy a healthy clientele. “There’s a kulfi wala in the Moti Nagar market who has been there for more than 30 years now. He has a small cart and you can see localites from the area overcrowding that place, especially on weekends,” says Richa, a student.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
