Are metrosexuals passé?
Move over, metrosexuals; not everyone is taken up by your ways. The old style man — unkempt, hirsute and comfortable in his own skin — had been pronounced as dead not too long ago. This was to be the age of the smooth-skinned, hairless wonder who is perfectly coiffed, buffed and perfumed. But this is not necessarily true, as a new survey in Britain has discovered. A large number of men, the survey found, tend to give the shampoo and deodorant a miss; as for shower gels, as many as 30 per cent have no time for it. This doesn’t imply that men’s grooming has not caught on, just to stress that it’s not everybody’s choice.
There is no corresponding research on what women think about today’s men, but we can hazard a guess. Not every young lady would be interested in metrosexuals. After all, who wants to discuss moisturisers and lotions with the boyfriend? Maybe not using deodorants is going too far, but surely the ladies don’t want to run into their loved ones in the beauty parlour and compete for the same manicurist.
But cosmetic companies who might be dreading the end of the well-groomed man can take comfort from the fact that sales of shaving products and skincare creams have actually been growing by leaps and bounds in Europe, a continent now in the midst of an economic crisis. Maybe the metrosexual man is winning the battle, after all.
