EC and the lure of Goa...
Many people are seduced by Goa. The swaying palms, the quaint villages, the sea, sand and sun; no one is immune to their charms. The Election Commission is worried that its officials, specifically the male ones, are a bit too susceptible to this lure. Past experience has shown that they tend to forget to do any work and slip into the laidback lifestyle. In short, they treat their stint as a holiday. So this time the EC has decided to send an all-female contingent to conduct the elections in the state.
The EC is a constitutional body and has to ensure that elections are held in a free and fair manner. This means it cannot afford to slip up at any time. As we know, women are usually more focused and experts at multi-tasking at the same time. They concentrate on the job and get it done; they can be soft and stern as the situation demands. The EC is convinced they will do a fine job and not get distracted by what is on offer.
But this is unfair. It discriminates against men and prevents the women being sent from soaking in Goa. There’s no harm mixing a bit of fun with business, especially if the work is done well and on time. Perhaps the EC should loosen up a bit and let everyone get an equal chance to go for duty in Goa.
