We are not alone
There was mixed news on the same day last week for the human race, which has been eternally curious about life existing beyond Earth and the Solar System of which it is part.
The latest data from the Mars rover Curiosity suggested that there was only a trace of methane on the red planet and so virtually ruled out any form of life. On the other hand, scientists from the UK claim to have found evidence of microscopic organisms living 16 miles up in the stratosphere, just above the atmosphere.
The assertion that biological entities may be continuously originating from space and arriving on Earth will be further grist to the imaginations of those who believe that life did not originate on our planet and that life is certainly not exclusive to Earth. Man has been searching for signs of life afar to the extent of sending recordings of voice and data on the Voyager 1 probe that is now believed to have left the solar system altogether and has entered or is entering inter-stellar space.
Thus far there are no signs to suggest that man is not alone in his universe. But that does not deter us from hoping to find alien life. Beyond that, man is also preparing for life beyond Earth as the Sun may run out of energy in about three billion years. News that planets with a Goldilocks atmosphere similar to our own exist in galaxies beyond ours engenders fresh hope in the search for extraterrestrial life.
