India gets a Hindi-speaking Tintin

The world-famous comic strip, Adventures of Tintin is now available in Hindi too. After being translated into 58 languages across the globe, the Belgian reporter will speak in Hindi, with the catchphrase “Great Snakes” being changed to Baal ki khaal, his four-legged companion Snowy rechristened Natkhat and detectives Thomson and Thompson renamed Santu and Bantu.

The Tintin series first appeared in French in Le Petit Vingtième, a children’s supplement in the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtième Siècleon on January 10, 1929. It was later put into a series of 24 albums, spun into a magazine and adapted for film and theatre. Of the 24 Tintin books, the Indian publisher, Om Books has come out with eight in Hindi and four others are soon to be published. The translated ones include Tintin in Congo, Tintin in America, Cigars of the Pharaoh, The Broken Ear, The Black Island, The Blue Lotus, The Crab with the Golden Claws and King Ottokar’s Sceptre.
