Look what’s happening!

‘We’re all in this together
Once we know
That we are
We’re all stars...’
Musical shows truly rock, don’t they? Why do you and millions like you all over the world love them? Usually because they combine two things that rule your lives: school and

music! Take High School Musical, for instance. The first two High School Musical films have been viewed by more than 590 million viewers worldwide since 2006 (try counting that on your fingers!), and High School Musical 3: Senior Year made more than 250 million dollars worldwide (try imagining that in your pocket!). And of course you know that movie no. 4 will be one of the highlights of 2011, besides an entire other full-of-laughs film called Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure also coming up this year. Back home, season one of Ishaan: Sapno Ko Awaaz De gathered up a throng of fans and made dhin-chak a household word, not to mention its cast of guys and gals who seem right out of real life. After the patchwork Ishaan: The Movie that seemed to be a filler between season one and two, coming up is the second season of Ishaan, hopefully featuring its trademark hummable songs.
Some grown-ups think that TV musicals or musical dramas are just a song-and-dance routine and a waste of time. That these quick-stepping, song-blasting programmes that are top-rated by you are nothing but empty, glamorous stories. But they are not, are they? Ishaan’s story is about being positive and finding that passion and simple, straight honesty wins over cut-throat ambition and ‘groups’ and ‘cliques’; it’s also about really good friends who stand by you. High School Musical features top-notch athletes (Troy), high-scoring students (Gabriella) in a story about doing one’s best and being comfortable with what you are. At the end of the story even the snobbish diva Sharpay finds herself a better person. So school + music + things you learn = pretty cool!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
