Neither praise nor criticism affect me

I find you more interesting as a person rather than as a filmmaker. Why doesn’t your personality reflect in your films?

When I speak, my thoughts are raw, unabashed, unapologetic and to the point and hence, are a direct extension of my personality. In my films, they are coming through characters which are developed for the sake of a story and which are not intended to depict my psyche, hence no film of mine can ever be as straight and as direct as my personality.

What is the driving force for you to want to make films — money or fame?
The driving force in me is neither of what you suggested. It is primarily nothing but a strong urge to see the world exactly the way I wish to see it and hear it exactly the way I want to hear it.

How do praise and criticism affect you?
To be honest, both praise and criticism don’t affect me because I already know what I am and what I am not and I also know the reasons for the same. What affects me though are the particular individual reasons people have pertaining to their praise or criticism.

Most people just indulge in petty, inane talk but consider themselves intelligent and have strong opinions on matters of which they don’t have even an iota of knowledge. Comment.
The world consists of various species of conscious, subconscious and also unconscious people and all of them think they matter in the larger scheme of things in one way or the other. They are physically alive but they are actually dead in their minds due to a combination of genetic defects combined with their misplaced frustrations towards life.
They further complicate this with their rabid streaks of extremely superior variety of inferiority complexes. These make them bark, sting and crawl all over as if they own the place and hence their strong opinions. But as long as we have no choice but to be in this jungle of people, then along with the peacocks and swans we have no choice but to bear with the cockroaches and caterpillars too!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
