Linen spells quiet luxe and elegance
What feels soft and breathes easy on your skin? Many would say linen is ideal for summer, but then what has made the fabric withstand the test of time and still be a favourite with the chiffons and georgette flaunting
brigade? “Linen is a comfortable and fashionable alternative to synthetics, which are too hot to wear in summer. In general, linen is appropriate for a broad range of occasions in the warmer months. This fabric has a long history of being associated with vacations and other leisure activities. Linen is a versatile addition to your wardrobe. You can wear it in a broad range of styles and colour choices, from traditional ones such as navy to bolder, more vibrant colours. The choices in linen make it relatively easy to find something appropriate for the occasion and that fits your personality. Linen can also give you ultimate comfort, being lightweight and breathable for your easy mornings while relaxing in your favourite cafe. This fabric allows you to look elegant, even as the temperature is climbing outside,” says Varsha Bhawnani.
Summer means choosing fabrics which are light, breathable, and easy to wear. Linen will give you all this, and more. “It is an evergreen summer classic that is always in style. As a symbol of comfort and elegance, wearing linen will distinguish you with a bit of sophistication while still looking relaxed,” says Sabbah Sharma.
Though designer Anjana Bhargav says that the composition of linen makes it a fabric that allows the body to breathe, the only problem with it is that it crushes very easily, so now there are linen blends available, which take care of that problem as well.
Many style gurus feel that linen spells elegance and quiet luxe and many more obviously sumptuous materials will find this quality tough to match. It is organic, dyes well, easy to cut precisely and very flattering on the body. “Till a short time back, most linen used to be imported from Italy. This made it expensive and intimidating. Many varieties of linen are now homegrown and many of these are cheap. Designers have always loved linen and there are many good styles available in the market. Tunics, trousers, kurtas, shorts, everything with enough value added in terms of surface work and design content,” says Anupamaa Dayal.
Designer Nikasha Tawadey believes that linen is best worn with its inherent characteristics like a slight crush and light colours. “Be careful of the synthetic variety which looks better than the original sometime,” she says.
