Naughty and Nautical
There is nobody who can work them like Coco and even though Chanel was known more for the acclaimed little black dress, she was also the first one to experiment with stripes. And spring 2011 catwalks are blushing with the colours of spring which is being ushered in by endearing blue and white stripes.
Nautical patterns are back in vogue and you can team these bohemian dresses with a pump or just like the Victoria’s Secret hottie Miranda Kerr does, sport horizontal stripes with stovepipe pants. Hollywood seems to be lovin’ this trend and from Vanessa Minnillo who was sighted flaunting a striped body hugging tee from Sonia Rykiel to the fashionista Kim Kardashian (of the famed posterior) everyone likes to do up this style by giving it their own unique twist.
“Stripes are definitely a warm-weather staple. A classic striped top recalls the elegance of a weekend in sun-kissed St. Tropez. Stripes are a great way to add a punch of graphic, visual interest to more basic pieces and can really complete a look,” says Michelle Manz, 7 For All Mankind’s Women’s Design Director.
With the return of the high waist, designers like Tommy Hilfiger and Emporio Armani are mixing the nautical tee with satin pants to up the glam o meter. “I think satin is a luxurious fabric and as a striped tee is considered a basic, it needs something glamorous to make it look stunning. I would also suggest tie up beach thongs in sunny yellow or pomegranate red to compete your look,” says designer Rina Dhaka.
Or you can go the Ralph Lauren way, team up a striped tee with a plain monochromatic full skirt and front open button down shirt. No, we aren’t saying, go completely the French sailor way, but the key to wearing this look is to be able to do it like Coco did —sporting the timeless pattern on a boatneck shirt.
