Party hotlist

Last week I wrote about my friend’s pursuit for the perfect party dress. And I was inundated with requests for tips on what is available, what is hot in terms of cuts and style, and most of all what is currently on the shelves. So I decided to write a sequel. This is Party dress Part II.

I checked out the market and here’s a listing of a few favourites. It is the festive season after all.
Catherine Malendrino has a beautiful black dress with a low cowl neck and leather patterned work on the front worked on net. The effect is that of chic peek-a-boo lace.
If you are looking for a clean cut dress perfect in its fit and flawless in the style, monochromatic yet dramatic, check out Paule Ka. Michel Kors is another designer who makes a simple A-line dress in a single colour look stunning.
Cavalli, the master of print, has juxtaposed red floral print and blue green abstracts to create the most gorgeous one-shouldered maxi dress. The drama emerges from the layering around the shoulder and the way the dress falls with a long slit along the leg. The green, blue and black exotic feather print cocktail dress is short frilly and one-shouldered. Contains all the ingredients to create the wow factor.
If you are into floral prints, do not miss the Jonathan Saunders white jersey dress scattered with multi-coloured flowers. It is a modern take on the typical look of English flowers. What makes it interesting is the grey criss-cross lines interspersed with the flowers.
Tibi has done a leopard print strapless jersey maxi dress with a twist. The dress has a soft feel to it as it combines colours such as olive, grey and fuchsia. Also if you are into shift dresses Tibi is the way forward.
Philip Lim’s monochromatic midnight blue dress is flattering even for a woman who may not have the perfect legs. It comes just below the knee and is done in layers and napkin-type drape, which means that it does not look fuddy-duddy in spite of its length.
Most designers seem to make dresses for super-skinny girls only. Milly makes tunic style dresses with striking prints which are good for fuller women and ladies who do not necessarily believe in exhibiting the curvature of the body.
Go for it. Be bold. This season wear something you have never worn before.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
