Time to show your stripes!

This season Prada paraded a bevy of stripes in all hues and variations on the Milan catwalk. And it didn’t take long for the fashion world, that’s always on a diligent lookout, to embrace good ol’ stripes as the ‘it’ trend of Spring Summer 2011. Hailed and nicknamed as Prada stripes, they are currently a rage among fashionistas.

Designer duo Kapil and Monica feel stripes are a permanent fixture in the fashion scene. “They never go out of fashion. At the moment, while vertical and diagonal ones are fine, it’s horizontal stripes that are hot property. They look best when sleek and thin. The Nautical look, sailor stripes, are very much in vogue this season. The combination of red, blue and white looks best. The conventional black and white pattern has taken a backseat as designers are going colour happy. Bright combination like flame orange with green, blue or green with yellow are catching their imagination,” they suggest.
Designer Jaya Rathore too is vouching for the popularity of stripes. She recommends, “Sheer fabrics, sophisticated silhouettes and bold stripe colours will make you stand out and get noticed. Flaunt your evening wear in stripes instead of the casuals they are usually associated with. A satin dress in wide horizontal stripe is a perfect fashion statement. And colours like brown, blue, red add a trendy flavour to stripe fashion. It works well in bold as well as muted shades. Always pair stripe dresses with a nice solid pair of shoes and neutral-coloured accessories.”
“The advantage of stripes is that it can enhance or camouflage the body posture of the wearer,” points out designer Meera Gupta. “Sporty stripes are very much in this season. Multi-coloured stripes give a refreshing look. Both thin and bold stripes are fashionable this season. Nautical stripes or ruffle stripes are also good choice. For a more casual look, sexy tees with shorts is perfect for summer.”
Designer Pam Mehta suggests, “Team striped shirts with a jeans or formal trousers. If you don’t want to experiment with striped clothes, go in for striped accessories like a chic striped summer hat, or a clutch or scarf with stripes.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
