Bhawanipur win but fail to reach SFs

Snehasish Dutta scored a brace as Bhawanipur FC pipped Air India 4-3 in a thrilling quarter-final league match (Group II) of the Durand Cup football tournament here on Sunday.

However, despite the win Bhawanipur failed to reach the semi-finals having failed to win their final group league match by a clear margin of two goals.
Indian Navy will meet ONGC while Mohamme-dan Sporting lock horns Mumbai Tigers in the semi-finals on Monday. Indian Navy had played a goalless draw against Bhawanipur and beaten Air India 2-0.
On the day, Dutta put Bhawanipur ahead in the 25th minute, before giving the eventual winners a 2-0 lead in the 40th minute.
Air India’s T. Jony Chand Singh narrowed the margin with an injury time goal (45+3 minutes) and Sudeesh A. (58th, 59th minutes) put his team ahead 3-2.
Manjit Singh drew parity for Bhawanipur striking in the 78th minute. With scores level, both the teams looked for a chance to move ahead and finally Jose Barreto (90+3 minutes) got it, when he converted a penalty corner at an injury time, but it was not enough.
