Cavani, part of new breed

There were many top marksmen you would’ve earmarked to have a say in the first few weeks of the season in Europe and across the world. None would’ve surprised you more than Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan of Italian descent was always rated high, let there be no doubt of that, but to show the kind of skill and ability as he has has in the past few weeks would’ve been nigh on impossible to predict.

There were ominous signs by the end of last season when he had made his mark in world football with a rich haul of 29 goals for Napoli in all competitions. In the space of 3 matches this season he has scored 4 goals, against opponents like Manchester City and AC Milan, and has propelled Napoli to the top of Serie A. A flamboyant, commanding presence in front, Cavani scored the purported ‘greatest goal to be disallowed’ against Barcelona in pre season by way of a spectacular bicycle kick which had the footballing worlds jaws open.

There were a host of football clubs across Europe vying for the young striker’s talent, but not before he had secured his immediate future with Napoli by signing a long term contract till 2016. Joy rapidly gave way to delirium on Sunday as ‘King Cavani’ was heralded as the greatest striker post his scintillating hat-trick against Milan’s previously miserly defence. Cavani has been a part of the generation of young Uruguayans which have led to a resurgence of the former football superpower. The glory of the Copa America 2011 notwithstanding, Cavani will be hoping the Scudetto can return to Napoli after 22 long years.

Last season, the ‘Cavani Matador’ calzone was Naples gift to its favourite Uruguayan. This season, Edinson will be hoping he can provide the fillings and top it off in style as well.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
