Coe slams Capello for England’s World Cup flop
London, Jul 26: England’s Olympics chief Sebastian Coe has slammed football team coach Fabio Capello over the Three Lions World Cup flop.
Coe, chairman of the London 2012 organising committee, said: “I was depressed with the way we prepared. I didn’t understand why you would want to take a team from sea level to altitude then back to sea level for a couple of friendles.”
“Then they were back up to altitude, with long coach journeys, overnight flights and intense training at the wrong time of the season, The Sun quoted him, as syaing.
“They are the sort of things you’d seriously question an Olympic coach for doing and I can’t see Dave Brailsford or Charles van Commenee doing that,” he said.
“I didn’t feel the Dutch or Spanish did that. Of all those who seemed to get it right, it was Jack Charlton’s Ireland at the 1994 World Cup in America. They worked on set pieces, slept, seemed relaxed and played quite good football,” he added.
Coe also wonders if Football Association bigwigs are qualified to pick an England boss.
“The question is whether those who decide whether he stays or goes are competent to make those judgments.
“Apart from Trevor Brooking, I’m not sure we have people who really have experience of tournament football at the coalface,” Coe added.
