Action from a six-a-side match on the first day of the trials for Manchester United talent hunt

The prospect of training with Premier League giants Manchester United got a tremendous response from football enthusiasts across the city on the opening day of the U-16 talent hunt at the Ambedkar Stadium on Saturday.

Close to 1,400 aspirants, presented themselves at the event, which is sponsored by a leading Indian telecom giant. All the aspirants showed tremendous potential, confidence and enthusiasm to prove their capability on the first day of their camp.
Called the Airtel Rising Stars, the initiative will be held across 16 Indian cities — Mumbai, Delhi, Panaji, Kolkata, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Shillong, Pune, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Chennai, Hyderabad and Jaipur — with the support of the respective state and district football associations over a three-month period.
Launched in association with the runners-up in the last season of the EPL, the programme is a rigorous scouting event that will choose 12 youngsters who will get the chance of a lifetime to attend a week long training camp at the club’s home at Old Trafford, Manchester, where they will train alongside the academy team. From each of the trials across the country, three best players will be picked to attend a final six day camp-cum-selection trial by coaches from United.
Officially certified and renowned coaches will be present on each of the preliminary trials to ensure that each player gets an equal opportunity and time to demonstrate his skills. Players will be shortlisted purely based on their talent and expertise.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
