The end is near
And then there are four. Games that is. What’s fascinating is that this time, last year, Chelsea were battling Manchester United as the Red Devils blew a healthy lead only to be three points ahead of their closest rivals only a month before that match in May 2011.
Of course, United deservedly won 2-1 and went on to clinch a record 19th league title but they had a home advantage this time, last year.
All the four games left for United will be a true test of their character and somehow five points just won’t seem enough.
It’s almost like a two-goal lead in the last 10 minutes of a game. They seem like a lot before your opponents start chipping away the deficit.
And Manchester City will eye a chance, even it is just a peek through a keyhole. However desperate Carlos Tevez’s return might be, another 6-1 this season must send confidence surging through the ranks.
They will have to of course thank Wigan Athletic for their position because City were looking at an 8-point gap no more than a week ago.
Wigan have done another few teams some favours as well. The first being Spurs, who are still eyeing a Top-3 finish after self-implosion worthy of one Homer Simpson.
The other team Wigan had enormously helped is themselves. From 19th to five points above the drop zone in two weeks is the kind of Harry Houdini act that Roberto Martinez pulled off last year. And the encore is on.
Swansea had been as impressive through the course of the season as Wigan have in the last few weeks and a 3-0 thumping was their reward that has near but ensured their mid table finish. Another team that has cemented their mid-table place is Sunderland.
The Black Cats have look like a different outfit under Martin O’Neil than the one you saw under Steve Bruce.
An extremely exciting season nears it’s end while the story up top and at the bottom is yet to be scripted. Just hope it’s written better than Liverpool’s season.
