High five for Indomitable Lions
A brace each by strikers Kologny Vigny Merime and Ebanga Bertin reduced Cameroon’s Nehru Cup match against Nepal to a no contest as the Indomitable Lions registered a thumping 5-0 win at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Sunday.
Cameroon took close to five minutes to come into their own. After that, it was a superb display of pass and attack by the Lions. Nepal had no option but to try and go into the break with as less goals as possible.
Their main striker, Jumanu Rai, was kept waiting forever in the Cameroon half and had to assume defensive duties in his own half as the opposition tightened their grip.
Cameroon dominated possession but some of their first few hits either landed straight into goalkeeper Riteesh Thapa’s hands or sailed over the bars. However, it didn’t take them long to get the scorboard ticking.
Skipper Bebey Kingue Paul initiated the move in the 12th minute. His cross wasn’t cleared neatly by a Nepalese defender and midfielder Makon Thierry’s shot rebounded from the goalkeeper’s hand towards Merime, who put it into the net to give his team a 1-0 lead. Cameroon got their second goal through Bertin in the 41st minute.
It was a three pass effort, which began with Thierry, who collected a goal kick by Nepalese keeper and passed to Ashu Tambe before Bertin headed it into the net. The second half was no different.
Paul generated an easy chance for Merime from the right flank in the 60th minute needing the striker just to slot the ball, with all Nepal men beaten. Merime made no mistake (3-0).
Bertin too got his second five minutes later to literally seal the match 4-0. Later, Momaso Joseph latched on to a poor collection by replaced Nepal keeper Bikesh Kuthu to round off an easy win.
