Kyiv boys reign supreme
Ukraine’s FC Dynamo Kyiv rode on Dmytro Zayikin’s four goals to beat MSP High School of Kerala 5-2 in the final of the boys Under-17 Subroto Cup school tournament in the capital on Monday.
The Ukraine outfit were the outright favourites for the title given their clinical display en route to the final, but the Kerala team were determined not to go down without a fight.
The European team asserted their supremacy with possession football right from the start. Zayikin struck two of his four goals in the 10th and 13th minutes to set the tone for the game.
Undeterred by the two goal deficit, the Kerala boys pulled one back through Muhammed Sabith in the 15 minute.
Ukraine pressed harder but Kerala goalkeeper Vishnu V.K. managed to hold them off for another 10 minutes before two more goals in the span of four minutes, all but sealed the tie. Zo Rostslav was the other goal-scorer for the winners.
Despite the loss, Kerala coach Benoy C. James praised his team for the fighting display. “The way our boys attacked and secured the first goal that definitely had raised our confidence. It was for the first time that Kerala had qualified for the finals in the history of the Subroto Cup and we are happy with the performance.”
Ukraine team manager Ivan also had a word of praise for their opponents. “When the Indian team scored the first goal, our boys had the initial jitters but were soon back to playing their best.”
Dynamo Kyiv scored a total of 34 goals in their seven matches of the tournament.
