Mighty Manchester in English Premier League
It is said that in the City of Manchester there are more Citizens than Red Devils.
If I had a Pound for every time I heard this myth, I’d give the Abu Dhabi royal family a run for their money, literally.
Until Thakshin Shinawatra was in charge at Eastlands, all was good and right with the world as Manchester United fans felt as threatened by Manchester City as a lion is from a block of cheese.
But this aura changed when the kind of riches that only oil barons can bring, funded a bottom-of-the-table team and gave them enough muscle to break the Big 4.
Under the ownership of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan since 2008, Manchester City has grown from being ‘Noisy Neighbours’ to serious title contenders.
From Championship grills to Champions League within half a decade and it is hard to argue the case that the Blue Moon is certainly on the rise.
Today we see how the two teams dominating all of England fare when pitted against each other and gaze into our crystal ball and see whose immediate future is full of glory.
Manchester United has won 66 games against City in all competitions since the 5-2 triumph in their first ever derby match all the way back in 1894. Their latest result being a 3-2 win to give United the Community Shield.
City on the other hand have won just the 43 times against United.
Looking at their more recent history there is little separating these sides. Although Roberto Mancini is yet to get his first league win over Manchester United, he has beaten them twice (once in the Carling Cup, then in the FA Cup), drawn once and lost 4 times to the Champions of England.
His team certainly got off to a flyer this year with his billion-dollar army, winning 4 from 4, scoring 15 and conceding just 3. While any team should be proud of such a dream start, they would also not expect to be second. But just like they always have been, Manchester City are in the shadow of Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson’s young brigade have won the same number of games b but have scored 3 more than City.
But 4 games into the season is too early to judge how the same teams will perform against more quality opposition.
Yet, whoever’s city it might be, these two teams are going to be fighting for that BPL trophy for a few years to come.
