A new look for Manchester City
Rewind to August 2008.
Manchester City, poor cousins to their famous neighbours; strugglers at the bottom half of the table and in financial peril.
Disconcerted mutters from supporters were soon replaced by high pitched shrieks and clamours for change and redressal. It looked like City would be following Leeds down the magic tunnel to league oblivion soon.
So when in September ’08, an Abu Dhabi businessman got bored of his yatches and villas and decided to go toy shopping in Manchester, he was greeted with an almost messianic delight.
Three years and millions of pounds later, City finally seems to have built themselves a rail road toward the League title. Last week saw the arrival of their golden bogey, Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero who happily tooted his arrival in grand style in the season opener against Swansea with two goals.
Aguero’s 30 minutes against Swansea showed in a nutshell his excellent abilities.
Dribbling which has seen many a La Liga defender fall, powerful snap shots which catch keepers unaware and excellent movement across the frontline which has seen him blossom.
City themselves provided a dress rehearsal with ominous portents for the other league challengers, and after a shaky first 20 odd minutes, found their groove and cantered to a win.
In the past two seasons, they resembled a disjointed assembled unit, lacking options and looking uncomfortable. That seems to have changed, with the stars looking ready to become more than just a pretty constellation.
The man who arrived from Atletico Madrid, having a shiny price-tag and a reputation to match, could be key to that.
