New recruits will bolster Gunners

Although many are still holding on to the last shred of hope that he will sign an extension, it seems, for now, that Robin van Persie is not going be an Arsenal player next season. And to compensate for that, Arsenal have spent around £38 million, this season, on three players.

LUKAS PODOLSKI
Germany’s No.10 is the youngest player to reach 100 international caps for Die Mannschaft. Although he prefers to play as a striker — and did so successfully for Cologne — he is equally comfortable down the left flank, and has played in that position most frequently for Germany. Expect him to be deployed down the wings for Arsenal as well.
OLIVIER GIROUD
The 25-year-old frontman — who was bought as a likely replacement for van Persie — is, like the Dutchman, left footed. He is however, more of an out and out striker, powerful in the air, and with a clinical finish. His purchase could really pay dividends if he clicks into the system, or be a disaster if he doesn’t. Either way, it will be interesting to follow.
SANTI CAZORLA
Bought for around £14.5 million, Santi could turn out to be the steal of the season. An ambidextrous midfielder, Cazorla is just as comfortable on the wings as he is through the centre. He could bring the much needed final pass which was missing from Arsenal’s repertoire last season.
He has proved his versatility, having played on both wings, attacking midfield, defensive midfield and as a regular central midfielder for Malaga last season.
The best piece of business for Arsenal, though, would be to hold on to van Persie. If Arsenal can get him to commit, they would be a real force to reckon with this season, in the League, as well as in Europe.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
