Sabeeth’s dream come true

Striker C.S Sabeeth, a native of one of the coolest districts in Kerala — Wayanad, is on cloud nine as he will be on the substitute bench of the Indian team that will face the German giants FC Bayern Munich today.

Sabeeth is the only Malayali selected in the team for the friendly against Bayern Munich — a testimonial match for Baichung Bhutia at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

A full-strength Bayern Munich squad will play against the Indian team and people will get a chance to witness the play of Philipp Lahm, Franck Ribéry, Arjen Robben, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Takashi Usami, Toni Kroos, Mario Gomez and Thomas Müller.

With so many well known names, Sabeeth is feeling the heat of the match and is excited about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “We have been training hard.

Though there is little chance that I will find a place in the playing 11, I will be on the substitute bench for sure. Moreover, the match is testimony to one of the best players Indian football has ever seen. I am happy and lucky to find place in the team,” said Sabeeth.

India is likely to field Jeje Lalpekhlua along with Baichung Bhutia up in the front. However, Sabeeth is not disappointed. “The training sessions in the camp were one of the best we have received. This is the first time I am playing along with Baichung and this will be our last meeting on the ground. I am happy about it,” he said.

Sabeeth was part of the national team in two tournaments previously — the World Cup qualifiers and the Asian Challenge Cup. He is also a regular in the Indian Under-23 team.

“For the past week, I have been receiving several calls from friends and family enquiring about the match. Everyone is so excited and it would be a dream match for me. Though we are all very excited, we do not want to lose the match and will be playing a good game against them,” he said.

“The stadium will be jam-packed and we expect good home crowd support. If I can play, then it would be one of the most memorable days in my life,” Sabeeth said.

Sabeeth is currently playing for Pailan Arrows and has put up an impressive performance so far. He has scored three goals in the season so far.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
