Schools from northeast dominate quarter-finals line up
The northeastern schools made their presence felt in the first-ever schools event for the U-17 girls at the ongoing Subroto Cup football tournament in the capital. In the last-eight line up decided on Saturday, half the quarter-finalists were schools from the northeastern region.
These include Mizo High School (Aizawl), Tyrsad Higher Secondary School (Shillong), Government Higher Secondary School (Nagaland) and NCC (NER).
On the last day before the knockout stage, NCC overwhelmed Oriental English School of Manipur 3-0 en route to their quarter-final berth. But the scoreline did not depict the fierce competition shown by the girls from Manipur. For NCC, it was a solo effort from S.Tejibala Devi, who scored a hat-trick. In the day’s other match, Government High School, Alkapuri, thrashed Pravara Kanya Vidya Mandir, Maharashtra, 8-0 to book their quarter-final berth.
Kabul-based Raba Balki School failed to field a fit team in their match against Nasibpur High School, West Bengal but even with the bye, the Bengal team could not progress to the next stage. Government Senior Secondary School, Nicobar, too failed to field a team against Government Higher Secondary School of Nagaland, but in this case the Nagaland school made it the last eight.
